4 Examples of Sustainability in Property Development

Sustainable Cities Are The Future

Embrace the future with sustainable cities are the future. As cities evolve towards environmental consciousness, explore four inspiring instances of sustainability in property development. Cities are becoming smarter and more environmentally conscious, which means we can all do our part to reduce our carbon footprint, too. Here are four great examples of cities that have implemented innovations to help achieve sustainable cities and communities.

Sustainability in Property Development – Living Roofs in London

Living roofs are a great way to add green space to a city. They can help with stormwater management and reduce the urban heat island effect.

In London, living roofs are being designed or amended to include densely planted with vegetation such as grasses, mosses, shrubs, and trees. This type of garden helps prevent runoff from entering the sewer system during storms by absorbing rainwater on site (instead of sending it into storm drains). It also reduces surface temperatures by shading residential and commercial buildings from direct sunlight.

Sustainability in Property Development – Natural cooling in New York City

The city has been using natural cooling since the 1960s, and it’s proven to be a successful strategy. The city uses the Hudson River to cool down buildings in summertime by pumping water through underground pipes that are connected to building foundations. The river water is then sprayed out into the air, where it evaporates and lowers temperatures around buildings by up to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sustainability in Property Development – Climate smart in Chicago

Chicago is a leader in the smart city movement, and its mayor has set an ambitious goal: to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. The Chicago Climate Action Plan sets out targets for reducing emissions and outlines strategies for reaching that goal, including working with partners like universities to develop new technologies that will help cut down on energy use.

Sustainability in Property Development – Green infrastructure in Los Angeles: .

Los Angeles is home to the world’s largest green roof, which covers nearly 10 acres of land. The LADWP says that this project helps reduce stormwater runoff by treating it before sending it into nearby waterways, thus protecting them from pollution. It also helps reduce noise pollution by absorbing sound waves instead of reflecting them back into the atmosphere. Finally, it helps reduce temperatures in urban areas–a phenomenon known as “the urban heat island effect.”
